The PLA airborne corps currently operates a number of fast attack vehicles (FAV) for airborne and special operations. The FAV was developed by Wuhan Lingyun Co Ltd, a former military aircraft maintenance factory located in Hubei Province. First deployed to the airborne corps in 2001, the FAV replaced its late 1990s counterpart, a paratrooper fast attack vehicle derived from Beijing BJ2020 light vehicle.
Of major importance to the PLA airborne corps is the increased offensive power the new FAV offers. A primary advantage of the FAV is its ability to be air dropped by parachute, as well as transported either internally or externally by the Air Force's medium transport aircraft such as Y-7 and Y-8.
The FAV has a unique layout featuring a 4-wheel drive configuration, independent suspensions, a rear-mounted liquid-cooled engine, as well as a central roll-over protected cage seating a driver and 3 passengers. More soldiers or additional stores could be carried on the pedals on both sides of the vehicle.
The vehicle uses a water-cooled, 4 cylinder, in-line 4-stroke patrol, 85hp engine originally developed for the Beijing BJ2020 lightweight utility vehicle. The two vehicles also share some components, which greatly simplifies maintenance and logistics. Compared to the BJ2020, the FAV is lighter, faster, with higher payload rating.
Its specially designed layout makes the vehicle suitable to be air transported or parachuted without too much preparation. A Y-7 transport aircraft can carry two of such vehicles, while a larger Y-8 transport aircraft can carry four.
